St. Nick

Santa doesn't visit our house.

Does someone else want to explain this to our three year old?

Woah.

  1. Well . . . here's what we do:

We celebrate St. Nick's day on December 6, with the carrots in the shoes and the chocolate coins. Dad and I also write the kids letters extolling the virtues of Christian living and reminding them of their baptisms. We sign them "Saint Nicholas," and tuck them into their shoes with a school-supply-ish gift. It's a lot of fun. :)

But the kids get that it's a game, mostly because they're really good at finding their presents before Party Actual. :D And because when they ask, "Did you write this letter?" I say, "Yes."

Then, for Christmas, we don't have to mess with Santa; the kids understand that he's a modern convention designed to sell more Coke (we heart Debbie Downer!). :D We still put out the cookies and milk on Christmas Eve (when we think of it) and we sometimes mark gifts "from Santa," but everyone gets that it's just for fun--a game. We don't "believe" in Santa, but he's a fun idea, so we make use of the idea insofar as it stays fun, you know?

And then, when all the nice old ladies at church ask, "Is Santa coming to your house?" the kids can say, "Yes." And everyone is happy.

  3. Hope your Christmas was joyous and merry. The Staudes second all the things already suggested for Santa... Saint Nicholas makes an uplifting story and the rest is all done with a "wink wink" "nudge, giggle" as we know we're all playing at Santa fun. Syd calls him "Santa friend" who I think she's figured out are people in red suits who give you new crayons and color books at the mall while mommy takes pictures. We did socks for our girls who dutifully left cookies out for daddy to consume in Santa's stead all the years they were at home. Nobody believes in Santa... we all believe in the fun of giving to one another because of the great gift already given... Merry merry to you! Spoil those Missouri Gaunts really well this week!
